First lady announces travel industry jobs for vets

The travel industry is promising to create nearly 3,000 jobs for veterans and military spouses by 2014 as part of a program announced Wednesday by Michelle Obama.
The first lady?s office said the American Society of Travel Agents was creating a coalition to help veterans and military spouses get jobs in the travel industry and hang on to them as families are transferred to different military bases.

Kentucky officials pull tourism website that touts roadkill bingo

A website that promoted Kentucky to British tourists as a place to play ?roadkill bingo? while visiting horse farms and bourbon distilleries has been taken down.
The website was part of a $179,900-a-year contract between the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet and British marketing firm Gosh P.R.
Cabinet spokesman Gil Lawson said Wednesday that state officials have also canceled the contract with the company.

International tourists set sights on Burma

The release of political leader and democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi in late 2010 after almost 15 years of house arrest was followed in March of last year by the transfer of power from a much-derided military junta to nominally civilian regime. Reconciliation between the western world and the Burmese state, long accused of authoritarianism and human rights abuses from forced labor to human trafficking, took another step forward three months ago when Secretary of State Hillary Clinton paid the country a landmark visit, meeting with both Suu Kyi and the leaders in power.

Airline hires ?whispering coach? to train crew

Shhh. Turn off your electronics and zip your lips. Virgin Atlantic?s newest first-class cabin is about to turn into a quiet car in the sky.
The British airline has appointed a ?whispering coach? to teach crew members how to whisper properly when lights are dimmed in its new Upper Class Dream Suite to be launched this May, starting with London to New York flights.
What does Virgin Atlantic consider a proper whisper? Anything between 20 to 30 decibels. Normal speaking volume is 60 to 70 decibels.
Virgin is taking to another level an effort across the travel industry to make customers feel that their rest and sense of tranquility is of utmost importance. Amtrak has a cellphone-free quiet car. Many hotels offer pillow menus and sleep concierges. Crowne Plaza even has snore monitors patrolling hallways at some British hotels.
