Brazil beats sloppy US 4-1 as Neymar stars

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) - Brazil had its way with the U.S. soccer team, with the stars in the famous yellow jerseys dribbling past the Americans and generally pushing them around for the first half-hour.

Neymar had another dazzling night against the United States, scoring one goal and setting up two more to lead the five-time World Cup champions to a 4-1 victory in an exhibition Wednesday.

"We need to get an edge more nastier," said U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann, the former German star and coach. "Maybe we're a little bit still too naive. Maybe we don't want to hurt people. But that's what we've got to do. You've got to do that at the end of the day. So we've got to step on their toes more and get them more frustrated and make a case with the referee maybe as well, for us, not only the opponent."

Thiago Silva, Marcelo and Alexandre Pato also scored for Brazil, playing the opener of a three-game U.S. tour.

Herculez Gomez, in his first start since the 2010 World Cup, scored for the U.S., which is preparing for its opening qualifier for the 2014 World Cup on June 8.

"Four-one was maybe not a scoreline that was indicative of the overall game. I think for long stretches of that game we kind of imposed our will on them," Gomez said. "I think the main difference was they were clinical in front of goal and we weren't."

Neymar, the 20-year-old Santos sensation, put Brazil ahead in the 12th minute after a hand ball on Oguchi Onyewu on Leandro Damiao's shot, a call the Americans disputed with referee Jeffrey Calderon of Costa Rica. Neymar then took a corner kick that Thiago Silva headed in for his first international goal in the 26th.

Gomez cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 45th following a fine run by Michael Bradley and cross by Fabian Johnson. But before an enthusiastic crowd of 67,619 at FedEx Field, Marcelo restored the two-goal lead in the 52nd as Jermaine Jones, Onyewu and American captain Carlos Bocanegra left him unmarked in front of the net. Pato entered in the 64th and added a goal in the 87th that the U.S. claimed was offside.

"We're the only team in the world that gets homered at home. It's unbelievable sometimes," Bocanegra said.

Klinsmann, a German who move to California with his American-born wife after retiring as a player in 1998, said the U.S. team has to be more assertive with officials.

"You watch big teams in the world, what they do, and there's a call going against them - Barcelona is one of them - they come with 10 guys towards the referee," he said. "The referee is confused. He doesn't know even know who to show a yellow card."

Landon Donovan said "that's not really in our character as Americans."

"We try to play the game fair," Donovan said. "We don't really dive. We don't do those kind of things."

Brazil, which receives an automatic berth as the 2014 World Cup host, improved to 16-1 against the U.S. with a 35-11 goal difference.

Neymar, coveted by many European clubs, called it an efficient win.

"It's not every day that one can come and apply all sorts of dribbles, between the legs, over the head," he said through a translator. "It was a good test to play with a tough team like the U.S."

Brazil coach Mano Menezes used mostly a roster than can go to the Olympics - limited primarily to players under 23

"Since the beginning, I knew we could trust them, building with this team, blending them with more experienced players," he said, also using a translator. "We blended to try to well balance the different sectors, and their response was very good."

Following a 1-4-1 start under Klinsmann, the Americans had won five in a row, including an impressive 1-0 victory at Italy and a 5-1 win last weekend over a Scotland team that already appeared to be on summer vacation.

Against sixth-ranked Brazil, the No. 29 Americans played more offensively than in the 2-0 loss at the Meadowlands two years ago, when they were outshot 20-7. This time the U.S. had a 15-12 advantage in shots.

Klinsmann continued to tinker with his front line because Jozy Altidore didn't arrive until Monday, and Clint Dempsey is recovering from a groin strain. Dempsey entered in the 57th minute, marking the first time he played with Donovan since Klinsmann replaced Bob Bradley as coach last July.

Gomez almost got another goal in the 64th, but his header off Johnson's cross was cleared off the goal line by Romula. Three minutes later, Neymar found a streaking Pato in front of the goal, but his shot bounced off goalkeeper Tim Howard's near post.

Brazil goalkeeper Rafael Cabral, making his Brazil national team debut, had a fine double save in the 76th, stopping Gomez with his left hand, then kicking away Terrence Boyd's effort. Cabral leaped to palm Bradley's header over the crossbar in the 85th, and Onyewu headed the ball off the crossbar on Donovan's free kick.

U.S. players were angry - but not that much, given it wasn't a game that counted.

"At the end of the day, we got caught a couple times, and that's what happens," Howard said. "The second half we mixed it up a little bit. We probably need to try to impose that will and try to turn it into a scrap earlier than we did."

liberation: NZ Politics Daily: 29 May

At each stage of the ?baby boomer? life cycle the decisions benefitting them have always been pushed as ?what was best (and necessary) for the country as a whole. And so it is now. The current pressure on National to agree to raise the age of eligibility for superannuation is perversely pushed as being necessary to remedy ?intergenerational unfairness? ? see, for example, Grant Miller?s?Doing nothing about super. It?s exactly the opposite in many ways but that shouldn?t come as a surprise to anyone who has tracked the fortunes of this ?lucky generation?.

?

If you were born in the 1950s you would have grown up as New Zealand?s economy boomed, with almost zero unemployment. If your family couldn?t afford a decent private rental there were literally entire suburbs of state houses built and available at low rent. These were not the multi-story blocks that later tenants had to endure, but roomy, well-built (and now much sought after) houses with quarter acre sections. If you wanted to own your own house but didn?t have the deposit then your universal family benefit could be capitalised and there were subsidised housing corporation loans to make sure the mortgage payment weren?t too onerous. Most health and education services were, for all intents and purposes, free. School donations were actually donations ? not invoiced with threats of exclusion if not paid.? Tertiary education required almost no fees and living allowances were easily accessible, along with plentiful holiday employment.

2 kiwisaver NZ Politics Daily - Bryce Edwards Otago University liberation blog - www.liberation.org.nz

Of course the top marginal tax rate was 66% in order to pay for all these benefits. But in the late 80s, just as middle class baby boomers entered their high earning years, the top tax rate was halved. That meant the next generation had to start paying and borrowing for their education, along with market rentals for state house tenants and numerous other user-pays charges.

?

A new generation of graduates already saddled with mortgage sized debt wasn?t really a problem. They were told the need to own your own home was irrational and there were plenty of houses they could rent from the well-off baby boomers, who were furiously investing their surplus income in property, claiming deductions but still free of any tax on their substantial capital gains. House prices rocketed ? which was great for growing untaxed wealth, but was a disaster for families trying to buy their first home.

?

Baby boomers who joined Kiwsaver early will have received the highest proportion of Government subsidy for their savings ? the state?s generosity is already being ratcheted down. Kiwisaver funds will be the icing on the cake for baby boomers, but is likely to be the main staple for those that follow with auto-enrolment already planned and compulsion being mooted by Labour (see: Alex Tarrant?s?Labour considers not letting KiwiSaver savings out of NZ). John Armstrong certainly sees the writing on the wall: ?it might survive as a vital back-stop for those unable to save for their retirement if the bulk of workers can draw their retirement incomes from elsewhere. It stands to reason that the more workers there are with KiwiSaver schemes, the less the future pressure on the existing state scheme? ? see:?Shift that would turn Key into a superman.

? 2 super 65 67 labour NZ Politics Daily - Bryce Edwards Otago University liberation blog - www.liberation.org.nz

Paper boys and girls are having their taxes increased to save a few million and childcare subsidies are being reduced, but huge sums are still flowing to the ?lucky generation? each year. The government apparently had no choice but to fork out $1.6 billion to save (overwhelmingly older) finance company investors who chased a few extra dollars in return for much higher risk. Treasury had kindly underwritten these risks and, as usual, the boomer?s well-being was deemed essential to all taxpayers.

?

Particularly hard hit will be Maori, Pacific people and those on low incomes whose relative life expectancy worsened in the 80s and 90s, a gap which has never been made up (see: Otago University?s?Unequal playing fields). The number of years they will be able to securely retire will be dramatically cut ? many Maori and Pacific males will never see a pension. Raising the retirement age is not only an intergenerational transfer of wealth ? it is effectively a massive shift in public benefits to middle and high income pakeha retirees.?

?

We shouldn?t be surprised that the ever-increasing health spend goes largely unquestioned and attempts to direct it to more cost-effective prevention rather than treatment continue to be resisted. We can probably look forward in a few years to greater government regulation and subsidies for funeral services ? those customised Harley Davidson hearses don?t come cheap.

?

Raising the age of entitlement to superannuation is presented as the only option. It is apparently unthinkable that we should ask the most well-off of a generation to contribute back some of the wealth they have accumulated (thanks to their dream run through the welfare state) so that their children can at least retire with the same security as the ?lucky generation?.?

?

Luck, as they say, has nothing to do with it.

Billionaire Kwok brothers renew bail in HK graft probe: source

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Thomas and Raymond Kwok, joint chairmen of Sun Hung Kai Properties , Asia's biggest developer, appeared briefly on Monday at Hong Kong's anti-corruption agency to renew their bail as part of a graft investigation that has gripped the former British colony and sapped shareholder confidence in the conglomerate.

Rafael Hui, a former head of Hong Kong's civil service, also reported to the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), leaving after a short stay.

More than $7 billion has been wiped off the company's market value since the billionaire Kwok brothers were arrested in late-March. Their estranged brother Walter was arrested earlier this month, widening a probe that has also netted Thomas Chan, the board member in charge of land purchases, and Hui, Hong Kong's chief secretary from 2005 to 2007 and a friend of the Kwoks since childhood.

Raymond Kwok arrived at the agency in the back of a black limousine wagon, looking stern. The cars of all three men were mobbed by TV crews and photographers trying to catch a glimpse of those involved in the ICAC's highest-profile case since its founding in 1974.

All three renewed bail, said one source with direct knowledge of the proceedings. Chan and Walter Kwok were also expected to appear at the ICAC later on Monday. No charges have been laid by the ICAC, and shareholders say Sun Hung Kai, which owns the International Commerce Centre (ICC), the city's tallest building and home to Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank and the Ritz Carlton, has lacked transparency over the probe.

"The longer it goes on, the longer it drags on the stock, and potentially wears on the business itself," said Tim Gibson, head of property equities in Asia for Henderson Global Investors, a fund manager that runs $800 million in Asia real estate stocks, including Sun Hung Kai. "It's a distraction we could do without."

The scandal has raised questions about the close ties between the clubby tycoon-dominated economy and the government.

The ICAC, which has said it is investigating suspected bribery and misconduct in public office, has the option of extending bail, charging those arrested or letting them go with an option to re-arrest them at a later date.

Sun Hung Kai, which counts Hong Kong telecom, bus and waste management units as part of its empire, was worth $37 billion before news of the March 29 arrests. The stock lost $5 billion the next day and has continued to lose steam, sinking to a 7-month closing low on May 18.

Sun Hung Kai shares were down 0.8 percent on Monday, underperforming the benchmark Hang Seng index <.hsi>, which was up 0.3 percent.

The three Kwok brothers have said they have done nothing wrong, and Thomas and Raymond insist it's business as usual at the family conglomerate. They have declined further comment, citing the investigation.

"GROSSLY INADEQUATE" DISCLOSURE

As the largest component of the FTSE EPRA/NAREIT Developed Asia index <.ftena3>, Sun Hung Kai is a must-have for mutual funds tracked against that much-followed benchmark.

The investigation overhang presents a tricky situation.

Investors are unsure whether now is a good time to buy a stock that has shed a fifth of its value, or whether they should sell a company whose top executives are ensnared in a messy scandal that may play out over several years. The Kwoks are preparing for a 7-year legal fight, according to one source familiar with their planning, who did not want to be identified.

One mutual fund investor said disclosure from Sun Hung Kai and investigators had been "grossly inadequate", adding the company had done little other than set up an internal committee to handle the investigation.

"Their actions to date haven't given minority shareholders a lot of comfort that they are dealing with it as seriously and aggressively as they could if it wasn't the family," said the investor, who did not want to be named.

Analysts' ratings on Sun Hung Kai stock have all been negative since the arrests of the firm's co-chiefs. 'Strong Buy' and 'Buy' recommendations have dropped to 8 from 18 two months ago, and the number of 'Strong Sell' and 'Sell' notices has more than doubled to 5. 'Hold' ratings have jumped to 10 from 4.

Sun Hung Kai's net income is forecast to more than halve in the year to end-June, to HK$21.13 billion, according to a mean estimate on Thomson Reuters StarMine. Full-year results are due in September.

FAMILY CONCERN

Like most of Hong Kong's powerful property companies, Sun Hung Kai remains very much a family concern, raising the stakes if the Kwoks are unable to continue their duties.

Shareholders should sell Sun Hung Kai stock into any short-term strength, CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets advised in a trading note this month. The broker has an 'underperform' rating on the stock. Other landlords such as Wharf Holdings , Hang Lung Properties , Hongkong Land and Swire Properties stand to benefit if shareholders lose faith in Sun Hung Kai, mutual fund investors said.

The company remains Asia's biggest property developer - but only just. Rival Cheung Kong (Holdings) is valued at $28 billion, and Australia's Westfield Group at $21 billion. Globally, Sun Hung Kai trails only U.S. shopping mall developer Simon Property Group by market value.

Scientist at Work Blog: The Extinction of Hawaiian Birds

David J. Flaspohler, an avian ecologist and conservation biologist at Michigan Technological University, writes from Hawaii, where he is studying the influence of human activities on birds and the natural ecosystems that support them.

Monday, May 21

This morning, we have driven the four-wheel-drive truck up the 35 miles and 5,000 feet of elevation from Hilo to the turn onto a gravel road that will take us back to the study area. We pass through the gate, enter the Upper Waiakea Forest Reserve, and begin to pick our way across a road bulldozed across the lava. Sitting in the truck as it rumbles and creaks over this road, you are in a constant state of motion, jostling against the person sitting next to you, the truck door and, if you are not wearing your seat belt, the roof. To the farthest kipuka, it is about 30 minutes on this lava road. From there, it is a 45-minute hike across boot-shredding lava to the most distant kipuka.

In bird research, you don?t lift anything heavier than a pair of binoculars. Here, the hardest days are when we move the mist-net poles, nets, sledgehammer, and the bird banding kit to the most distant kipuka. Mist nets are fine nets that were invented in Japan in the 1600s and made of silk to catch small birds for food; they?re now made of nylon, adapted by 20th-century researchers as a way to humanely capture birds for measurement and marking. After banding for two days in one of the 34 kipuka involved in our studies, the poles, nets, sledgehammer and banding equipment are hiked across the lava to set up in another kipuka.

Our poles are made of galvanized electrical conduit pipe, and because most Hawaiian forest birds spend their time in the tall forest canopy, we use double- or even triple-high mist nets to reach 25 feet up. Once in the kipuka, we search for a natural net lane in the forest. Two people work to thread the net over the poles, and raise and steady the poles with guy ropes. A rope and pulley system is used to raise the net, and to lower it when a bird is caught.

To date, we have banded about 1,500 birds over two breeding seasons, each released with a unique combination of colored bands so it can be identified when it is sighted again. From this information, we can estimate annual survival and adult and juvenile dispersal.

We are also monitoring nests to estimate success and to see if the presence of nonnative rats influences nest success; rats will eat eggs, nestlings and even adults if they can catch them, as rats can climb trees. Half of the kipuka we?re studying have rats, and half had rats removed. The long-term viability of these bird populations will be determined by whether survival and reproduction are sufficient to compensate for mortality and nest failure. Just 20 miles away, the i?iwi, a common bird in these kipuka, has all but disappeared from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, evidence that survival and reproduction were insufficient to sustain that population.

As I cross the lava, balancing 30 pounds of poles on my shoulder, I glance up at the broad shield volcano Mauna Loa and consider an amazing bit of irony. Visible on the volcano is the oldest atmospheric carbon dioxide monitoring station in the world. Data from this station provided one of the first pieces of evidence that the carbon dioxide was increasing in concentration. It might seem that a bit of warming would pose little threat to tropical birds, if not for Captain Cook and British imperial ambitions.

Cook was the first European to stumble across the Hawaiian Islands in 1778, and his arrival brought a new era of exotic species introductions, malaria-carrying mosquitoes among them. Mainland birds have their own variety of malaria, but after long exposure it is rarely fatal. In contrast, native Hawaiian birds have almost no resistance. Since the early 1800s, the exotic Plasmodium and its tropical mosquito vector (Culex quinquefasciatus) have contributed to the extinction of at least a dozen endemic Hawaiian birds and have all but eliminated the remaining species from the warm lowlands.

For now, tropical Culex cannot survive the cooler temperatures at our field sites above 5,000 feet. Above 9,800 feet, trees and the birds that depend on them disappear. So today, native birds with no resistance to malaria are confined to a narrow elevational band. Under many warming scenarios, this refugia promises to narrow or even disappear as Culex is able to move upslope, leaving the ultimate fate of these remarkable birds to an human-mediated endgame between the parasite and the na?ve immune systems of Hawaii?s surviving birds.

Considering the carbon dioxide station some miles away, I wonder at the cruel calculus of all of these forces, set in motion by the ambitions of men centuries ago and poised to erase a wonder of evolution that will never come again. Yet seeds of hope have been found within the genetic blueprint of some Hawaiian birds. The apapane and Hawaii amakihi have shown some genetic resistance to malaria. If hope is indeed the thing with feathers that perches in the soul, as Emily Dickinson wrote, then these birds may be its perfect embodiment.

Blind Chinese activist's brother returns to closely guarded village, lawyer says

A rights lawyer says the brother of blind Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng has returned to his closely guarded village in eastern China.

Ding Xikui says he received a message from a friend of Chen Guangfu that said Chen had returned to Dongshigu village. Chen had traveled to Beijing, where he sought legal advice from Ding this past week on how to protect his son from what the family's supporters call retaliation by local officials.

Ding had no further information Sunday, and it was unclear if Chen returned to the village voluntarily.

Chen Guangcheng sought protection of U.S. diplomats last month after escaping abusive house arrest in Dongshigu. It sparked a standoff between Beijing and Washington that resulted in Chen being allowed to go to the U.S. to study.

$99 for Club Fitting and Swing Evaluation in the TaylorMade Performance Lab at Robin Nigro Golf Academy ($300 Value)

Well-rounded golfers must master a variety of skills, including driving, reverse putting, and suppressing the part of the brain that associates high scores with victory. Chip away at preconceived notions with this Groupon.

$99 for Two Hours of Practice in TaylorMade Performance Lab ($300 Value)

Upon entry into the TaylorMade Performance Lab, golfers slip into a motion-sensor vest and attach sensors to their extremities, which precisely capture intricate movements of their swings throughout the session. Players can then watch from every conceivable angle as their swings are replicated by a digital doppelganger that breaks down club-head speed, launch angle, and spin rate. The data gathered is then used to reveal ineffective swing habits and calculate the type of clubs, club shaft, and wiffle-ball bat players should use to achieve optimal results on the course.

Robin Nigro Golf Academy

Dynamic golf duo Robin and Mark Nigro help golfers develop optimal swings at Robin Nigro Golf Academy's full driving range, pro shop, and academy. The pair first joined forces when Mark began teaching golf to Robin, then 23, who thrived under Mark's deft training and, in two short years, ascended the ranks from late-starting beginner to a competitor on the Futures Mini Tour. Recognizing their undeniable chemistry, the two joined forces and now foster successful golf skills with lessons tailored to golfers of all stripes, often enlisting technological teaching aids to enhance their swing diagnoses and placate the club's supercomputer overlord.

Those looking for solo practice sessions can take to the outdoor driving range, where clubbers launch balls off of astroturf hitting mats out into a zoysia-grass valley peppered with multiple target areas. With covered, heated hitting bays, the range lets pin hunters work on their power draw or high fade while safely protected from rainstorms or predatory hot air balloons.

The Groupon Guide to: Bonding with Your Child

Babies come out of the womb so physically weak that they will love anyone strong enough to hold their jello-like bodies, but as kids grow older, parents must earn their love. Here?s how to force your kid to adore you:

Buy Them a Car: Your kid doesn?t want to be seen in whatever hot metal garbage you?re driving around. Drop off your spawn at their favorite local dealership, give them your credit card, and then go wait for them to meet you at the nearest Pizza Barge franchise.

Be a Cool Parent: Make it obvious that you?re not like other parents by dressing in teenager clothing (tight jeans and a T-shirt from a sandwich shop that doesn?t exist anymore). If people mistake you for your child?s loose-skinned older sibling, just go with it. Tell them that your child?s parents disappeared while committing a crime of passion together and you decided to raise your sibling as a graduate-school project.

Spend Time with Them: When children are still young, you can just carry them around in a sling on your chest, but as they grow older and heavier, it?s better to stay attached by sewing a shirt big enough that you both can wear it at the same time. If your kid refuses to wear the shirt, cry loudly until you both feel embarrassed, and then call your kid?s crush and cry loudly to them.

?A Community of Writers? book launch at Fredricksen Library

br>

This week of vacation has afforded me opportunities I would not have had otherwise to get out into the community. Last night, the Fredricksen Library in Camp Hill held a launch party for ?A Community of Writers,? a collection of short stories from Sunbury Press edited by Ann Elia Stewart.

"Community" editor and workshop leader Ann Elia Stewart

The library has been the home of a creative writing workshop funded by David Craumer as a gift from the estate of his wife, Natalie, who had been a longtime reader. Not only is Natalie?s estate funding the workshop, but the fund has been managed so that the principal has been preserved. The twice-a-year workshop is limited to 15 people, and has been an ongoing concern for 10 years.

Robert Craumer telling us about his late wife, Natalie Craumer, and her love of reading and writing.

I had heard about ?A Community of Writers? at the Pennwriters? convention the week before and bought a copy, so the evening gave me an opportunity to put some faces to the names and reconnect with people.

The event on the main library floor was packed, with about 70 people attending. After a reading from five of the writers, we adjourned to another room for a champagne toast, some book-buying and book signings.

A celebatory toast to "A Community of Writers" and its contributors

But it occurred to me, as I stood in the back, eyes closed, listening to the readings, how difficult it is to develop a strong writing voice. The stories were different: a child telling about being forced to ride through the night with her mentally disturbed mother; a fat girl aboard a cruise ship with her beautiful friend; a satire involving God; an account of a girl writing morale-boosting letters to two soldiers in Vietnam; and a barfly enjoying her drink and cigs and looking down on everyone else (imagine Miss Haversham on a bar stool and you?re not too far off).

There were some genuinely funny moments. The scenes were vividly written. They were certainly publishable stories.

Listening to them made me realize that, with the tidal wave of stories out there, the most difficult part of the rewriting process is developing a point of view. It?s probably the one part of the story process that can?t be taught. Details can be researched and provided, there?s all the nouns and verbs in the dictionary that one can find and want. But only the writer can get inside the character?s skin and tell us how they see (or reveal, since sometimes even the characters themselves don?t know) about what they?re experiencing.

It?s like the prison guard in Stephen King?s ?The Green Mile,? talking about ?walking on the skin of the world.? That phrase has stuck with me since I read the series when it came out in paperback, one installment a week. That one line encapsulated, like bouillon, what he saw as his role in the world, and it has stuck with me after all these millions of words since.

Contributor Carol Lauver signing a copy of "Community."

Writing has its pleasures, but publication is its own reward. ?A Community of Writers? contains 25 stories, each only a few pages long. It?s an onion of a book, and as I talked with the writers that night, I learned that several of them have books coming out this year. I?ll be looking forward to seeing what they?ve come up with, knowing that there?s a great local institution that helped speed them on their way.

Bergenfield Firefighter Stole $2,020 From Union, Cops Say

Bergenfield Firefighter Stole $2,020 From Union, Cops Say
United States?(New Jersey) - A borough firefighter has been charged with third- degree theft, after allegedly taking $2,020 from the fireman's union checking account. Edgardo Gomez, 41, of Dumont, was arrested May 14 and admitted to making ATM withdrawals from the Fireman's Benevolent Association account between Feb. 24 and March 13, according to Police Capt. Michael Carr.

Gomez was released with a summons, Carr said, but the case has been referred to the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office. "They will review the case at their level, and they may tell us to add a misconduct charge," Carr said.

Borough Administrator Frederick McGarril confirmed Thursday that Gomez had been suspended without pay, pending the outcome of the case. McGarril would not comment further, saying it was a personnel matter.

Gomez was the treasurer of the association, which has roughly six members. Carr said no motive had been determined.
