Be alert for parking ban during Porter July 4 midnight parade

With the upcoming July 4 festivities approaching, Porter police chief James Spanier shared information residents should know with the Town Council on Tuesday.

He said for the July 3 fireworks, which take place at the Indiana Dunes State Park but affect the Porter Beach area, beach residents can get a flyer at either the Police Department or the town hall that will help ease congestion.

Spanier also advised that parking on the north side of Lincoln Street in downtown Porter will be banned during the July 4 midnight parade; illegally parked vehicles will be towed.

Public Works director Brenda Brueckheimer urged Porter residents to fly American flags for the July 4 midnight parade and for the Family 4th Fest parade later that day.

By unanimous vote the council approved an assembly permit for The Village Tavern to conduct a street dance on a closed portion of Lincoln Street July 14 from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. The annual event is a fundraiser for the Porter Fire Department.

In other business, it was announced that signs are being put back up at Porter Beach to warn the public when they are entering an easement across private property and to please be respectful when they are on it.

Park superintendent Jim Miller said VFW Post 2511 has donated $200 toward the repair of the War Memorial at Hawthorne Park. Miller also said its a challenge to maintain 27 newly planted trees at Hawthorne in the current heat and drought.

Associate town attorney Laura Frost said Porters zoning boards are recommending that town hall staff, not the Porter County Assessors Office, provide the list of contiguous property owners needed for notification of a pending zoning petition. Frost suggested a new $20 town fee for the service. An ordinance will be drafted for Town Council consideration July 10.

Also Tuesday, to comply with a new Indiana law the council voted 5-0 under suspension of the rules with no discussion to adopt a recommended policy regarding nepotism and contracting with the town. Council president Greg Stinson said if the town didnt adopt the ordinance by July 1, it could face budget delays from the state.

The meeting began with applause as retiring Ward 1 council member Bill Cantrell entered the room. At the conclusion of her report Brueckheimer told Cantrell, "I cant even tell you how much youve improved my world. Thank you so very much, Bill."

Cantrell was a member of the Porter Stormwater Management Board prior to his election and he continued to serve on that board, which works closely with Brueckheimer on town drainage projects and the federally mandated MS4 stormwater program.

Florida OLB Enjoys Ohio State Camp

?Ohio State is great, their facilities are off the charts, the coaching staff is very, very into their job, they get down and dirty, they?re good people. The players were very helpful and they?re good guys. The program, it impressed me,? Richard Yeargin said.

Yeargin said he felt very confident about the way he performed in camp and it seemed like the coaches really enjoyed working with him. He feels confident about getting an offer from the Buckeyes in the future.

?The coaches were very helpful throughout the camp, just telling me little pointers here and there, things I could do better, things I really did well on. Afterwards the coach, I picked up a good vibe, he told me they?d love to get me back up there for a game to see it again. So I?m guessing after a few games this season, depending on how I do, they?ll make their determination on whether or not they?ll offer me, so I?m just waiting on that,? he said.

?It seems like they like my size, my legs, my build, and my stature, they could do a lot with that, and I guess my athletic ability.?

Yeargin already has offers from Clemson, Wake Forest, and Wisconsin. He plans to visit both Clemson and Georgia Tech later this summer with his teammates, Sean White and Khairi Clark. White and Clark will also be names to keep an eye on in the 2014 class.

It was probably inevitable, but now it's official: Carly Rae Jepsen's ubiquitous "Call Me Maybe" is the #1 song in the country, overtaking Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know" atop the Billboard Hot 100.

It's been quite a voyage for the Canadian-born Jepsen, one that's featured cameos by Justin Bieber, unwitting assists from Barack Obama, and more cover versions that we can possible count. Still, there are plenty of other measurable statistics, so here's a look at the rise of "Call Me Maybe" to the top of the charts, by the numbers.

108 million: Number of views the "Call Me Maybe" video has racked up on YouTube since debuting on March 1, 2012. The clip is currently the most popular music video on the site.

12 million: Number of views the Barack Obama "dub" of the song has garnered on YouTube, making it the most-watched of the innumerable "Call Me" covers.

3.3 million: Number of digital downloads "Call Me Maybe" has sold to date, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

269: Number of days since September 20, 2011, when "Call Me Maybe" was officially released on iTunes. It is currently the Music Store's most-downloaded single.

.269: Current batting average of New York Mets second baseman Justin Turner, who has used "Call Me Maybe" as his at-bat music.

193: Total length, in seconds, of "Call Me Maybe." Jepsen sings the hook 11 times over the course of the song, or once every 17.5 seconds.

157: Number of days since Justin Bieber first tweeted about "Call Me Maybe," posting a video of former "Swag Coach" Ryan Good and "Pretty Little Liars" star Ashley Benson singing along to the tune and officially beginning Jepsen's Stateside ascent.

118: Number of days since Bieber's "Call Me Maybe" video first premiered on YouTube, featuring cameos by Selena Gomez, Ashley Tisdale and Big Time Rush's Carlos Pena. The clip has been viewed more than 42 million times to date.

16: Number of weeks since "Call Me Maybe" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100, entering the chart at #38 behind Big Sean's "Dance (Ass)."

13: Number of countries in which "Call Me Maybe" has reached #1, including Australia, Hungary, Ireland and Jepsen's native Canada.

11" Number of U.S. charts "Call Me Maybe" currently resides on, including Pop Songs, Dance/Club Songs and Adult Contemporary.

8: Number of weeks Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know" held the top spot on the Hot 100, before being dethroned by "Call Me Maybe."

1: Number of full-length albums Jepsen has released to date: 2008's Tug of War remains her sole LP (she also released an EP, Curiosity, in February).

A Beginner?s Guide to Anti-Virus Programs and Removing Computer Viruses

Due to the population of immense importance placed on Computer and Technology, it is crucial that we know how to protect their computers against computer viruses. These viruses can be downloaded from the Internet, making it easier for a user to insert a virus into their computer without him / her knowing. Anti-virus software can help block viruses from entering a computer, but sometimes a virus can slip past these defenses. There are two things a person can do to remove a virus from their computer without taking it to the repair shop.

1. Back up their data. Some users seem to forget to do, and when a virus infects your computer and deletes all data on the hard disk of the computer, he would back a long way. While most computers come with an option to store a backup of a user's files on an external hard drive, which also increases the risk that viruses also available to be copied to the external hard drive. Users can use a hard drive dock or download their files on storage systems online file instead.

2. Run virus scans. Users must first start their computer in Safe mode before running the virus scan. They can also download Anti Virus programs on the Internet, but users must ensure they choose programs that are proven. If users can still access the Internet on computers, they can use online scanners to help them identify and remove viruses. These scanners are also able to improve computer performance and clean the hard disk.

Before we perform these steps, they should first ensure that their computer and technology is indeed a virus. Some "symptoms" of the infected computer includes inaccessible or hard disks, the menus are distorted, and strange error messages. Computers that often crash, freeze, or run slowly, can also be infected by viruses. However, these can also mean that the computer has problems with the software. Anti-virus programs and scanners are the only sure way to determine if a virus was introduced into the computer.

There are several types of anti-virus programs that people can install on their computers to help eliminate harmful add-ons. Spyware is directly aimed at removing spyware from a computer, and prevents spyware from being installed even in the future. Browser Security ensures users they can surf the Internet safely, and the firewall serves as a first defense of the computer against unauthorized access. The parental control, spam filters and protection against phishing are other types of anti-virus programs.

In addition to providing easier ways to communicate with people (among others), and Computer Repair technology also gives people the chance to protect themselves against viruses and those with malicious intent. These programs reduce the risk of viruses, allowing people to use their computers without any delay.

(AP) ? U.S. Olympic track and field athletes will wear uniforms at the London Summer Olympics that Nike says could shave up to 0.023 seconds off 100-meter sprint times ? a difference that could have elevated Walter Dix from bronze to the silver medal at the Beijing Olympics.

Dix still wouldn't have caught the fastest man in the world that day. Usain Bolt of Jamaica simply ran away from the field in the final, setting a world record that he would later break again.

But maybe these uniforms, with dimples that mimic a golf ball, could help the Americans close the gap on Bolt and his training partner, Yohan Blake.

The company said its tests showed an unexpectedly big difference in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter races. The outfits were unveiled Thursday evening in New York.

"We couldn't believe the numbers," said Martin Lotti, Nike's Olympics creative director. "That's not just the difference between first and second place, it's about making the podium."

The added texture might seem counterintuitive, but the company studied the aerodynamics of golf balls and found the textures and dimples make it more efficient. Patterned patches are on the forearm and leg, the fastest-moving parts of the body.

"The logical thing would have been to make it smoother or use lighter materials, but we challenged ourselves to think differently," Lotti said.

Spyder made a similar claim with speed suits in Vancouver for skiers ? and the Americans had one of their best showings in Alpine. The Speedo LZR Racer that Michael Phelps and teammates donned for the 2008 Beijing Olympics made a mockery of world records.

"It's a sport of hundredths and thousandths ? there has been no great leap forward in track and field, like the suits swimming had," said Jill Geer, chief communications officer for USA Track and Field. "But if there is a possible benefit of shaving some amount of time off of a performance, that's fantastic."

Geer said Nike includes USA Track and Field athletes in the process and is serious about helping athletes perform at their best, but she said the athletes are just as focused on "having the letters U-S-A across their chests and representing their country."

"For an athlete who puts on the uniform, maybe the knowledge it might make them two-hundredths of a second faster, that information alone might be enough to make them run faster," she said.

The shoe worn by marathon runners will also save about 19 percent of its old marathon shoe weight ? or about the weight of a car over the 40,000 steps typically taken in a marathon, Lotti said.

The shoe comes from a complete shift in the manufacturing process, which results in a single, seamless knit upper. A traditional sneaker is put together more like a puzzle piece, with multiple patches glued or stitched together. The glue or stitching adds weight, he says.

Nike also wanted to create greener uniforms ? the speedsuit's material comes from the nylon from 13 recycled water bottles. The basketball uniform is made from 22 bottles.

Nike also revealed three medal-stand uniforms for different athletes for the Olympics, which start next month. Track cyclists, sailors and synchronized swimmers are among those who would wear a silver jacket and pant; basketball players and soccer players, as well as handballers and water polo players, would be in a navy, satiny tracksuit; and archers, equestrians and wrestlers would be in a bomber-style jacket that's designed as a nod to a varsity letterman jacket.

"The outfits should be celebratory," said Lotti. "You don't want it to be a standard training outfit. ... It's an opportunity for athletes to shine."

After soliciting input from athletes and getting to know their personal stories, Lotti said a one-size-fits-all approach wasn't going to cut it for him and his design team for the London Games this summer. "It not how things are anymore," he said.

Of course, the commonality among all Team USA members is their home country, so Americana also was to have a starring role. The flag is on the same spot on the arm for all of the athletes' clothes, not just the winners' jackets but on the uniforms, too. And "United States of America" is written on the back.

But there is no cliche red, white and blue. "We wanted to elevate it. I think of it more like a Corvette, a pickup truck and a Cadillac. They're all different and have different looks, but they are all distinctly American."

Designers also drew inspiration from another point of American pride: the image of astronauts as they walk as a "team" just before embarking on a mission. "It's a moment when you are proud of your country and at the pinnacle of human potential," Lotti says.

Consumer versions of Olympic apparel and accessories will be available this summer.

Ralph Lauren is designing Team USA's opening and closing ceremony uniforms, as well as the casual clothes they'll wear in the Olympic Village.

Peace Portal golf tournament supports Launching Pad

A lucky golfer could win a new car at the 11th annual Launching Pad golf tournament and silent auction at the Peace Portal golf course on Friday (June 15).

All a participant has to do is make a hole-in-one and they will win a sporty new car donated by Flag Mitsubishi, one of the sponsors of the event.

Flag is also providing two 12-seat buses and one SUV for the use of the Launching Pad Society, the charity that operates a recovery program for low and moderate income people with substance abuse problems in South Surrey.

This year, the event is in the memory of Worth Johnson, the late president of the society?s board of directors.

The cost per person is $150 for golf and dinner, $40 for dinner only.

To register or donate, contact Will Swanston at 778-387-1828 or email: willswanston@gmail.com.

The Launching Pad began operating in 1994 at a 12-bed facility in Aldergrove, then moved in 2001 to a location in South Surrey on the White Rock border.

It provides room and board for 28 residents at a time, mostly alcoholics and addicts learning how to lead clean and sober lives. In 18 years of operation, the Launching Pad estimates it has helped several hundred men recover from addiction.

West is still best - Winnipeg Free Press

Projected growth by province

A recent report by the Conference Board of Canada, an economic research group, predicts Alberta will lead Canada in growth in the coming year, but Manitoba will be no slouch either. Its economy is projected to grow 2.9 per cent in 2012 and 2013, led by mining and agriculture. That's the same as Saskatchewan, which grew by 4.8 per cent last year, but an expected pull-back in potash should cool things down. Alberta's economy is expected to grow at about 3.8 per cent and 3.7 per cent this year and next. B.C.'s economy is forecast to grow by 2.4 per cent this year and 3.4 per cent in 2013. In contrast, provinces east of Manitoba are expecting growth at less than two per cent in the next two years, with the exception of Ontario for this year, forecast at 2.3 per cent growth.

Tips for making the move

Investors Group's Myron Knodel says people moving to a new job in another province or even within Manitoba can take advantage of some potential tax-saving deductions:

  • If you're selling your home at a loss and are compensated for it by your new employer, up to $15,000 of that compensation isn't a taxable benefit. But if you aren't compensated, you can't claim the loss on the sale as a tax deduction.
  • You could be paying a higher price tag for a home. That means a higher mortgage, so it's important to create a rough budget on how that might affect cash flow.
  • Consider holding onto your current home, if possible, and renting it out to cover costs. "The costs related to that, including mortgage interest, would now be deductible against your rental income," he says. "And if you can carry two mortgages, sometimes that is a backstop people will put in place just in case the move isn't what they really want over the long term."
  • Keep in mind, if you move to a different province you'll be subject to different taxation rates. "Under our tax system, the province that you are registered in at Dec. 31 is the province that you will be subject to tax in for the entire year, assuming you are an employee and not a self-employed person." The catch is you need to establish residence before the end of the year. The tax savings can be substantial. For people earning at the top marginal rate in Manitoba and who then move to Alberta and earn the same amount, they could save more than seven per cent of their income in provincial taxes for income earned above $67,000. The highest marginal rate in Alberta for provincial tax is 10 per cent. It's 17.4 per cent in Manitoba.
  • If your new employer covers your moving expenses, those are not taxable benefits. If your new boss doesn't do that, many of those costs will be deductible expenses against your taxable income. They can be claimed for either the tax year you move or the following year. Among the deductible expenses are transportation and storage costs (such as packing, hauling, movers, in-transit storage and insurance) and travel expenses (vehicle expenses, meals and accommodation for you and your family). See CRA's Information about Moving Expenses handout for more detail.

Migration patterns

Statistics Canada data on interprovincial migration for 2009-2010, the most recent figures, reveal 2,893 Manitobans moved to Saskatchewan and 4,883 moved to Alberta. In contrast, 2,047 Saskatchewanians moved to Manitoba and 4,850 Albertans moved to Manitoba.

If you're recently out of work, or simply looking for a new gig but Manitoba's slow and steady economic growth spits out too few jobs with too many applicants for your liking, you may want to consider the advice of a popular phrase of the past.

Yet it still remains apt today.

'Go west, young man... or woman... or greying baby boomer.'

This may hardly seem a revelation. Over several decades, Manitobans have moved to other provinces in search of fame, fortune and glory.

Yes, Manitoba has been successful in recent years at attracting immigrants from around the world, but it's been less so in keeping those born and bred here in-house -- though a good portion eventually come back, too.

Those who do look west today for work should find plenty of opportunity, says Koula Vasilopoulos, regional vice-president with Robert Half, a recruitment firm specializing in administrative, legal, IT and accounting positions.

"We're seeing industries growing, such as manufacturing, agriculture, resources, health care and construction," says the Calgary-based executive, originally from New Brunswick.

"We're not where we were in 2008 when there was an absolute shortage where we had to bring in people from other countries to staff positions, but I can definitely see the tempo picking up in Alberta and Saskatchewan -- particularly more than other provinces."

Still, growth has its cost. While the West flexes its economic muscles, the East withers -- a point federal NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair touched on last month when he remarked Canada's economy suffers from "Dutch disease."

Although his comment rubbed westerners the wrong way, there is some truth in his politicking.

Our manufacturing sector has undoubtedly been hurt by our rising dollar -- increasingly referred to as a petrocurrency. And this situation does bear some similarity to what the Netherlands experienced in the 1970s.

"Like many European nations, it was a manufacturing country in the '60s after the Second World War," says Tony Demarin, president of BCV Financial in Winnipeg. At one time, Europe was a cheap place to produce goods, because European nations' economies were emerging from the ravages of a world war.

But the Dutch discovered natural gas off their coast in the late 1950s.

"What that eventually did was it drove up the cost of doing business in that country from a currency perspective, because it brought in revenues from natural resources."

The Dutch guilder, its currency at the time, increased in value relative to the currencies of the nations that imported its goods. Dutch goods became more expensive and, correspondingly, less attractive.

For a long time, Canada too benefited from a low dollar relative to the U.S. currency, but our resource industry -- Alberta bitumen in particular -- has driven up the loonie's value.

Foreign investment is pouring into northern Alberta -- hundreds of billions of dollars.

"By definition, it requires oil companies to buy Canadian dollars to make those investments, and it pushes up the value of the currency," Demarin says. "At the same time, if commodity prices remain strong on a global basis, money flows into Canada and also pushes up the value of the currency."

It's supply-and-demand economics -- only involving currency instead of goods and services. The demand for the loonie puts pressure on the supply of money and pushes up its price relative to the euro, the yen and most importantly the U.S. dollar -- the world's reserve currency.

"Obviously, for Eastern Canada, which is generally the heart of our manufacturing industries, this causes pricing pressures," he says. "It's also the part of the country that doesn't have the same growth advantages economically as Western Canada."

Manufacturing is largely tied to U.S. consumers, who aren't snapping up goods as they once were, whereas Western Canada's economy is increasingly focused on China, which despite its blemishes, is still growing rapidly.

But while the "Dutch disease" analogy applies in some respects, Demarin says Canada is much more diverse economically than the Netherlands was, and most manufacturers here adjusted to the higher dollar years ago.

"If you can't make money without a weak currency, then you're going to have to relocate your business," he says. "Gildan Activewear moved its business to Honduras as an example."

For investors, Canada's resource sector's success is generally good news. Many large energy firms, for instance, are the stalwarts of many a Canadian's investment portfolio. Even our banks are beneficiaries of the petrocurrency, Demarin says. Their assets -- much of which is held in Canadian dollars -- increase in value, too. They also make a lot of money by financing resource growth, and you only need look at their strong recent earnings as proof.

As consumers, we also benefit.

Canada imports almost as much as we export, and most of the imports are manufactured goods and services.

"It reduces what we call import inflation," he says, adding it's also good for some businesses. "Companies that want to get more efficient need to buy equipment from primarily U.S. companies -- Microsoft and Cisco, for instance -- and can buy these items more cheaply."

But when it comes to the employment outlook, the West looks the best. Alberta and Saskatchewan will likely continue to lead the nation in labour-market growth, according to a recent Conference Board of Canada forecast.

As a result, Canadians in other provinces -- Manitoba included -- may be looking to make a geographical career move.

Those who do ponder such a move have important financial considerations to mull over besides salary, says Myron Knodel, director of tax and estate planning at Investors Group.

"The big one is housing," he says. Chances are if you're moving west, housing costs will increase.

"You may realize a loss on the sale here, so as a tax-planning point, if your future employer is willing, they could compensate you up to $15,000 and that would not be considered a taxable benefit to you."

Yet housing costs in Alberta and Saskatchewan are not as expensive as you might think. A recent RBC study found the cost of carrying a mortgage in Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon and Regina is about 30 per cent or less of household income. Winnipeg is in the mid-20s. Toronto is above 40 per cent, except for condos in the mid-20s. And Vancouver is the highest, with detached homes hitting 80 per cent and condo mortgage costs about 40 per cent of income.

These figures are based on pre-tax income, and taxes are lower in Alberta and Saskatchewan than here. For instance, Knodel says, Alberta's provincial income tax tops out at 10 per cent for the highest earners, and there's no PST.

Still, he says, non-financial factors often play as much of a role in the final decision.

"What impact will this have on the family?"

After all, life can be pretty sweet here: short commutes, cottage country, Jets-mania and that generally "friendly" Manitoba atmosphere.

"Those are things you can't put a dollar figure on, but you obviously can't ignore them either when considering a move," he says.

'Madagascar 3,' 'Prometheus' team for big weekend

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Circus animals and space beasts have lifted Hollywood to a huge weekend.

The cuddly critters of "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" led the weekend with a $60.4 million debut domestically, followed by a big opening for Ridley Scott's alien saga "Prometheus" at No. 2 with $50 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

DreamWorks Animation's "Madagascar 3" was the family favorite for the weekend, reuniting voice stars Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith and David Schwimmer as the zoo animals continue their travels by joining a circus.

"Madagascar 3" outdid the $47.2 million debut of the 2005 original, though it came in behind the $63.1 million opening of the first sequel, 2008's "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa." ''Europe's Most Wanted" had the added benefit of today's higher ticket prices and a bump from fans who caught 3-D shows, which cost a few dollars more than 2-D screenings.

Still, fans remain loyal to the franchise, and "Madagascar 3" received generally better reviews than the previous two installments.

"It's the beloved characters and their comic adventures. And 'Madagascar 3' is critically the best-reviewed of the franchise. Both audiences and critics really love this one the most," said Anne Globe, head of marketing for DreamWorks Animation.

"Madagascar 3" also took in $75.5 million internationally for a worldwide debut of $135.9 million.

"Prometheus," from 20th Century Fox, stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron in an offshoot of director's Scott's 1979 sci-fi horror tale "Alien." ''Prometheus" did big business despite an R rating, which can limit a movie's audience since fans under 17 must see it with an adult.

Conventional wisdom is that action films should come in with a PG-13 rating to cast the widest net possible for its audience.

"A $50 million weekend disproves that rule, for sure," said Chris Aronson, head of distribution for 20th Century Fox. "This movie is so special. It's visually stunning, great storytelling as Ridley is known for. It's Ridley Scott's vision. I'm an unabashed fan of the movie, and the performance at the box office bears that out."

The movie added $39.2 million overseas, bringing its international total to $91.5 million and its worldwide take to $141.5 million since it began rolling out in some markets a week earlier.

The one-two punch of "Madagascar 3" and "Prometheus" lifted Hollywood out of an early dip in summer-season revenue. After three-straight weekends of declining receipts, domestic business totaled $177 million, up 29 percent from the same weekend last year, when "Super 8" led with $35.5 million, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

"It has to do with the variety of movies in the marketplace," said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "This is a perfectly programmed summer weekend with a PG-rated animated family film combined with an R-rated, intense sci-fi movie."

The previous weekend's top draw, Universal's "Snow White & the Huntsman," slipped to third-place with $23 million, raising its domestic total to $98.5 million.

Sony's "Men in Black 3" finished fourth with $13.5 million, putting its domestic receipts at $135.5 million.

The superhero smash "The Avengers," from Disney's Marvel Studios, was No. 5 with $10.8 million, lifting its domestic total to $571.9 million. The year's top-grossing film, "The Avengers" added $7.8 million overseas, raising its international haul to $824.4 million and its worldwide revenue to just under $1.4 billion.

Lionsgate's "The Hunger Games," No. 2 on this year's box-office chart, took in $1.1 million to cross the $400 million mark. Its domestic total stands at $400.3 million, and the film has taken in nearly $650 million worldwide.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted," $60.4 million ($75.5 million).

2. "Prometheus," $50 million ($39.2 million international).

3. "Snow White & the Huntsman," $23 million ($24.6 million international).

4. "Men in Black 3," $13.5 million ($38.3 million international).

5. "The Avengers," $10.8 million ($7.8 million international).

6. "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," $3.2 million ($342,000 international).

7. "What to Expect When You're Expecting," $2.7 million.

8. "Battleship," $2.3 million.

10. "Moonrise Kingdom," $1.6 million.

Union Rags nips Paynter to win Belmont Stakes

NEW YORK (AP) ? Union Rags picked up right where I'll Have Another left off, coming from behind to catch a Bob Baffert-trained horse at the finish in a Triple Crown race.

In Saturday's Belmont Stakes, it was another photo finish decided by a neck. Just like the Preakness.

The 3-year-old bay colt barreled through a slim opening on the rail to edge Paynter, dealing Baffert, jockey Mike Smith and owner Ahmed Zayat a third loss in this year's Triple Crown series.

"We needed every bit of the mile and a half," winning trainer Michael Matz said.

I'll Have Another won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness with stirring stretch drives over Baffert's Bodemeister. But the champion stunned the racing world Friday when he was scratched from the Belmont and retired due to a tendon injury, relinquishing a shot at the first Triple Crown sweep since 1978 and only the 12th ever.

His absence opened up the race for Union Rags, who finished a troubled seventh in the Derby after a bumpy start.

Union Rags skipped the Preakness and switched jockeys for the Belmont ? from Julien Leparoux to John Velazquez, who picked up his second Belmont victory; he won in 2007 with filly Rags to Riches.

"I have to give it to the horse. He did it all for me. He just worked so unbelievable and I was just hoping he could put that work into today's race and he did," said Velazquez, who will enter racing's Hall of Fame in August. "I was very proud of him.'"

A crowd of 85,811 cheered as Paynter and Union Rags battled down the stretch, and Union Rags barely caught the front-runner in the second straight photo finish to decide a Triple Crown race this year.

"Is there a Triple Crown for seconds?" Baffert said. "I really felt like I was going to win the Belmont. It was snatched away again."

Zayat was just as bummed, calling it "a heartbreaking defeat."

"He ran his guts out," he said, referring to Paynter, who was making just his fourth career start. "I'm very disappointed we opened the rail for (Union Rags)."

Jockey Mike Smith took the blame.

"I'm an old veteran, you know," he said. "They're not supposed to get through on the fence on me, and he did. I dropped the ball. My fault."

Union Rags was along the inside in the middle of the pack until it was time to make a move for the lead, and that's when Velazquez guided him to the inside of the front-running Paynter. They raced head-to-head, with both jockeys furiously whipping their horses in the shadow of the wire. Union Rags stuck a neck in front in a finish that was decided by a photo.

Union Rags, the 5-2 second choice, covered the 1? miles in 2:30.42. The colt owned by Phyllis Wyeth returned $7.50, $4.20 and $3.40. Paynter, who sat out the Derby and Preakness, paid $5.10 and $3.90. Atigun was another 1 3-4 lengths back in third and paid $10.60 to show. He also skipped the first two legs of the Triple Crown.

"It was my dream and he made it come true," said Wyeth, wheelchair-bound as the result of a 1962 car accident in which she broke her neck. "Nobody would have gotten through on the rail other than Johnny. That was unbelievable. He just said, 'Move over, I'm coming.' He believed in the horse and Michael got him there."

Paynter and Smith bolted to the lead out of the gate and stayed in front under a moderate pace, with long shots Unstoppable U and Optimizer tucked behind him. Union Rags saved ground by hugging the rail all the way around, while Dullahan, who also went off at 5-2, dropped back to ninth in the 11-horse field.

Turning for home, Union Rags was full of run, but needed an opening. Velazquez had no room to swing outside, so he focused on finding a hole along the rail. Suddenly, a sliver appeared when Paynter slid over just enough to let Union Rags through in the final sixteenth of a mile. And then it was a charge to the finish line.

"He jumped right in there and before I could do anything about it, it was too late to stop him," said Smith, the 46-year-old Hall of Famer who was aboard Bodemeister in the two earlier defeats. "I certainly didn't want to let the stewards decide the outcome of the race."

Street Life was fourth, followed by Five Sixteen, Unstoppable U, Dullahan, My Adonis, Ravelo's Boy and Optimizer. Guyana Star Dweej trailed badly and was eased in the stretch by jockey Kent Desormeaux.

Before the race, I'll Have Another with jockey Mario Gutierrez aboard walked into the winner's circle for a tribute to the newly retired champion. Trainer Doug O'Neill removed the chestnut colt's saddle for the last time as his barn staff hugged each other and the crowd cheered in a poignant salute.

Sheen wasn't 'winning,' was in 'total denial'

Peggy Sirota for Rolling Stone

By Rolling Stone

Charlie Sheen looks back on his rocky past while plotting the next phase of his career in the new issue of Rolling Stone, on newsstands Friday. The actor, who walked away from the massively popular CBS sitcom "Two and a Half Men" last year after a bizarre public meltdown -- complete with its own set of memorable catchphrases, from "Winning!" to "Tiger Blood" -- will soon star in the new FX show "Anger Management."

On his post-'Two and a Half Men' antics: "Clearly, a guy gets fired, his relationships are in the toilet, he's off on some [expletive] tour, there's nothing 'winning' about any of that. I mean, how does a guy who's obviously quicksanded, how does he consider any of it a victory? I was in total denial."

On being off the wagon and making no bones about it: "I mean, the [expletive] works. Sorry, but it works. Anyway, I don't see what's wrong with a few drinks. What's your drink? Tequila? Mine's vodka. Straight, because I've always said that ice is for injuries, ha ha."

On RS.com: Charlie Sheen as American as apple pie

On his foot fetish: "I've not dated girls because of their feet, just the length of certain toes and the shape of where things should be and they're not. Hammertoes are bad. And the second toe being too long? That's bad, too."

On his mended relationship with ex-wife Denise Richards: "He and I are like best friends now," says Richards. "Confidants. He tells me everything." Adds Sheen, "And we sleep in separate rooms. Everybody's going to want to know that, too."

ASUS Computex keynote now on YouTube relive the excitement, the yelling

You think it's easy up there on stage? Then just try shouting "ubiquitous cloud computing era" at the top of your lungs without sounding silly. It's virtually impossible, as ASUS chairman Jonney Shih discovered 45 seconds into the video after the break. Fortunately, he quickly moved onto his company's rather stellar array of Computex reveals, including the dual-booting Transformer AiO (which doubles up as the "world's biggest tablet"), a couple of Windows 8 hybrids and the Taichi swiveller -- not to mention some live performance art ten minutes before the end. If you're the "Home C.I.O." in your family, then it could be professionally negligent to miss this.

ASUS shows off a docking monitor built for the PadFone, we go hands-on (video)

ASUS shows off a docking monitor built for the PadFone, we go handson video

Back when ASUS formally launched the PadFone, it trotted out a handful of accessories to go with it: a keyboard dock, tablet station and even a stylus that doubles as an earpiece. As it turns out, the outfit had even more goodies up its sleeve: we just spotted a PadFone docking monitor hanging out in the ASUS booth here at Computex. For starters, it is what it sounds like: a 27-inch 24-inch display with a cradle designed specifically to accommodate the PadFone's dimensions. There are also HDMI, VGA, DVI and four USB 3.0 ports in case you want to use it as a standalone monitor.

When you plug in the handset, the display turns into an all-in-one PC, with Ice Cream Sandwich as your desktop OS. Since the 1920 x 1200 screen isn't touch-enabled, you'll have to get used to interacting with Android using only a mouse and keyboard. We'll admit: we would have preferred to just tap the home button instead of click on it, especially when we were ready to switch apps, but nonetheless, Android makes for an intuitive-enough desktop operating system, what with the home screen full of shortcuts. Funnily enough, even, we felt more comfortable using Android in a desktop setting than we did with Google Chrome OS, which was actually designed with PC form factors in mind. Otherwise, we found ourselves craving a little more pixel density, but we did appreciate the matte finish, which offers wide viewing angles despite the fact that this isn't an IPS display.

According to an ASUS rep staffing the event, the Docking Monitor will eventually go on sale in the US, though he couldn't say when or for how much. In the meantime, check out our hands-on photos and quickie demo video.
