Amazon X-Ray Aims To End Unidentified Actor Angst

To ring in this year's Holocaust Memorial Day, the classy hackers at Anonymous took down a bunch of Israeli government websites on Sunday and say they caused over $3 billion in damage. But they didn't totally get away with it. Within a few hours of the attack which Anonymous says affected 100,000 websites, 40,000 Facebook pages, 5,000 Twitter accounts and 30,000 bank accounts, an Israeli hacker broke into the website that Anonymous had set up for the attack, dubbed Operation Israel. ...

BioShock Infinite

Shattered dreams form the foundation of BioShock Infinite, the third installment in Irrational Games' impressive saga exploring the devastating effects of isolation (and isolationism) on the human psyche. But even if you loved the original BioShock (2007) and its sequel, BioShock 2 (2010), this chapter won't leave you with the impression your own dreams have been betrayed. Wedding familiar game-play elements from the preceding titles with exciting new mechanics, an engrossing story, and stunning visual design, BioShock Infinite is the culmination of the series' aesthetic and promise to turn a mirror on humanity by probing as deeply into the self as possible.

Columbian Exposition
You must, however, begin this game by abandoning your preconceptions of what the BioShock universe is. For starters, it extends well beyond Rapture, the undersea paean to objectivism (in the first game) and collectivism (in the second) you've explored before. Infinite is set in Columbia, an airborne tribute to?and corruption of?American Exceptionalism as viewed from a perspective that recalls that of the now-legendary Chicago World's Fair of 1893. In the game's chronology, that was the year Columbia, self-sustaining and faith-focused American settlement, took flight and eventually broke away from the Union that spawned it. Now, in 1912, a series of civil wars has reduced it to a perversion of the values it once held dear, a place fueled by racism, blind nationalism, and religious extremism that's led the inhabitants to worship the ?prophet,? Zachary Hale Comstock, who envisioned the enterprise and took it to the skies.

It's into this boiling-over melting pot that Booker DeWitt is literally launched. A hired gun on a mission to retrieve a missing girl named Elizabeth and wipe away the debts that are crippling him, DeWitt is taken to a desolate island where he finds that the only inhabitant within the only structure, a lighthouse, has been gruesomely murdered, and discovers a device that catapults him to Columbia. A bewildered stumble through a temple-like welcome center and one eerie baptism by immersion later, DeWitt emerges into the unsettlingly patriotic enclave, where Founding Fathers (specifically Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson) are worshipped as gods, and the morality of that transitional era is frozen in place.

It doesn't take long for the (relatively) more modern DeWitt to fall afoul of the Columbians and their parochial ways. As soon as that happens rescuing Elizabeth becomes for him less a job than a crusade, one that leads the pair through Columbia's various neighborhoods?the town square, the romantic boardwalk, a hoity-toity gated community, the workers' slums, and Comstock's imposing homestead among them?learning more about this stilted society and their troublesome places in it. (One of the first, tantalizing hints: Elizabeth was a ?miracle? child, born after a single week of gestation?an event her mother, strangely, is no longer around to confirm or deny. Hmm.) What the two uncover is an epic conspiracy that doesn't just involve the privileged upper class and the put-upon laborers on whom they depend, but also may reveal to DeWitt and Elizabeth that the only thing less certain than their futures are their pasts.

CA-NEWS Summary

In mid-term doldrums, Canada's Conservatives hope to reboot

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Voter fatigue with Canada's ruling Conservatives and signs of stress within the government are putting Prime Minister Stephen Harper under pressure to freshen up his team and policies as the telegenic son of Pierre Trudeau starts snapping at his heels. Even though the election is 30 months away - in October 2015 - the next few months will be a critical time for Harper, given mounting evidence in opinion polls that the Conservatives risk losing power after what would be nearly a decade in office.

China warns against "troublemaking" on Korean peninsula

BEIJING/SEOUL (Reuters) - China warned against "troublemaking" on its doorstep, in an apparent rebuke to North Korea, and the United States said it was postponing a missile test to help calm high tension on the divided Korean peninsula. The North, led by 30-year-old Kim Jong-un, has been issuing vitriolic threats of war against the United States and U.S.-backed South Korea since the United Nations imposed sanctions in response to its third nuclear weapon test in February.

Five die in Christian-Muslim clashes in Egypt

EL KHUSUS, Egypt (Reuters) - Five Egyptians were killed and eight wounded in clashes between Christians and Muslims in a town near Cairo, security sources said on Saturday, in some of the worst sectarian violence in Egypt for months. Christian-Muslim confrontations have increased in Muslim-majority Egypt since the overthrow of former president Hosni Mubarak in 2011 gave freer rein to hardline Islamists repressed under his rule.

Twelve Afghan civilians dead in air strike: Afghan officials

SHIGAL, Afghanistan (Reuters) - Eleven children and a woman were killed by an air strike during a NATO operation targeting Taliban commanders in eastern Afghanistan, officials in the region said Sunday. Civilian deaths have been a long-running source of friction between Afghan President Hamid Karzai and his international backers. Karzai has forbidden Afghan troops from calling for air strikes and NATO advise crews not to fire at or bomb in populated areas.

Afghan attacks kill U.S. diplomat, soldiers, others

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (Reuters) - A car bomb blast killed five Americans, including three U.S. soldiers and a young diplomat, on Saturday, while an American civilian died in a separate attack in the east. The diplomat and other Americans were in a convoy of vehicles in Zabul province when the blast occurred, Secretary of State John Kerry said in a statement.

Italy's center left divided over nemesis Berlusconi

ROME (Reuters) - Two months after placing first in a vote but falling short of winning power, Italy's main center-left party is still divided over whether to swallow its animosity and consider a government with its scandal-plagued nemesis, Silvio Berlusconi. Italy has been in limbo since a February election gave no bloc enough votes to govern alone. The center left won a majority in the lower house but not in the Senate, and a huge protest vote for the populist 5-Star Movement has split parliament three ways.

Powers and Iran fail to end nuclear deadlock in Almaty

ALMATY (Reuters) - World powers and Iran failed again to end the deadlock in a decade-old dispute over Tehran's nuclear program in talks that ended in Kazakhstan on Saturday, prolonging a standoff that could yet spiral into a new Middle East war. No new talks were scheduled but big power negotiators, who earlier this year were insisting that time was running out, were at pains to say the diplomatic process would continue.

Xi promises peaceful, prosperous China helping neighbors

BOAO, China (Reuters) - China's President Xi Jinping pledged on Sunday that change and peaceful development will power his country's economic rise and sustain growth within its borders and beyond. Stressing that peace was pivotal for the future of the world's second biggest economy, Xi appealed to business and political leaders to use diplomacy and dialogue to resolve disputes and allow wealth to spread and solve problems.

Sri Lanka to probe mass grave with more than 150 dead

COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lanka is setting up a presidential commission to investigate a mass grave with the remains of more than 150 people, an official spokesman said on Sunday. Two reports submitted to a court last week said that the human remains, in the town of Matale 142 km (88 miles) north of the capital, dated back to the period 1986-1989 when Sri Lanka faced a Marxist insurrection.

Maduro plays up his bus-driver roots for Venezuela campaign

CARACAS (Reuters) - Gripping the wheel and grinning at passengers, acting President Nicolas Maduro drives a bus to campaign rallies before an election he hopes will let him steer Venezuela to six more years of hardline socialism. From banners all around him, the image of the man Maduro calls his "father," the late Hugo Chavez, beams beatifically and salutes.

Officials: 'Anti-government' couple may be at sea with kidnapped children

Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office via AP

Joshua and Sharyn Hakken may be sailing out to sea after Joshua Hakken allegedly kidnapped their children.

By Ian Johnston and Matthew DeLuca, NBC News

An ?anti-government? man alleged to have kidnapped his two young sons from their grandmother?s house may be trying to escape in a sailboat, according to officials.

Police say that Joshua Hakken, 35, apparently broke into his mother-in-law?s Tampa home after 6 a.m. on Wednesday, tied up his mother-in-law and then fled with the boys, Cole, 4, and Chase, 2.

Cole Hakken, 4, left, and his two-year-old brother, Chase.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said that Joshua Hakken and his wife Sharyn, 34, may be traveling together in a 25-foot, 1972 Morgan sailboat, NBCMiami.com reported Friday.

The vessel is blue and has the name ?salty? with a picture of a paw near the back of the hull on each side. It has a white sail with blue trim and its registration number is FL3717BK, the FDLE added.

Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office told NBC station WLFA.com that Hakken had recently bought the boat.

Deputies told the station a witness saw the boat going under the Johns Pass bridge a couple of hours after the abduction Wednesday.

"We've said all along, making irrational decisions doesn't always make you unintelligent. We know he's a very intelligent individual. He's an engineer," Hillsborough County Sheriffs spokesperson, Larry McKinnon, told WFLA.com.

"Wouldn't put it past them to be able to pull into one of these coves or one of these inlets and then board a vehicle. So we're not gonna eliminate our land search, we're still maintaining the amber alert. We're now expanding it into the Gulf of Mexico, " McKinnon said.

"Hopefully, we're going to find them soon. As we've mentioned before, our goal is to reach out to them in a peaceful manner and to allow them to open an exchange of communication and dialogue so we can get this resolved without anyone getting hurt. "

Craig Johnson, an experience boater and volunteer search and rescue participant, said, "If I was him, he's probably heading towards Cancun or Cuba. If he's going to Cuba, he's gotta go around Key West. That wouldn't be too smart."

In a previous release, the sheriff?s department said that "both suspects are anti-government and have attempted a previous abduction at gun point in Louisiana.??

Official: Obama proposes cuts to Social Security

(AP) ? President Barack Obama's proposed budget will call for reductions in the growth of Social Security and other benefit programs by including a proposal to lower cost-of-living adjustments to government social safety net spending, a senior administration official says.

The proposal attempts to strike a compromise with congressional Republicans on the Fiscal 2014 budget by combining the president's demand for higher taxes with GOP insistence on reductions in entitlement programs.

The official, who spoke on a condition of anonymity to describe a budget that has yet to be released, said Obama would reduce the federal government deficit by $1.8 trillion over 10 years.

A key feature of the plan Obama is proposing for the federal budget year beginning Oct. 1 is a revised inflation adjustment called "chained CPI." This new formula would effectively curb annual annual increases in a broad swath of government programs, but would have its biggest impact on Social Security.

Obama's budget proposal also calls for additional tax revenue, including a proposal to place limits on tax-preferred retirement accounts for wealthy taxpayers. Obama has also called for limits on tax deductions by the wealthy, a proposal that could generate about $580 billion in revenue over ten years.

The inflation adjustment would reduce federal spending over 10 years by about $130 billion, according to past White House estimates. Because it also affects how tax brackets are adjusted, it would also generate about $100 in higher taxes and affect even middle income taxpayers.

Obama's budget, to be released next week, comes after the Republican-controlled House and the Democratic-run Senate passed separate and markedly different budget proposals. House Republicans achieved long-term deficit reductions by targeting safety net programs; Democrats instead protected those programs and called for $1 trillion in tax increases.

Obama's budget proposal includes features from an offer he made to House Speaker John Boehner during fiscal negotiations last year. Those talks ultimately failed but Congress did agree to increase tax rates on the wealthiest Americans.

The reductions in growth of benefit programs, which would affect veterans, the poor and the older Americans, is sure to anger many Democrats. Labor groups and liberals have long been critical of Obama's offer to Boehner for including such a plan.
