Cholesterol-lowering drugs may be linked to increased cataract risk

ScienceDaily (Aug. 7, 2012) ? Patients using cholesterol-lowering statin drugs may be at increased risk of developing age-related cataracts, according to a study -- "Age-related Cataract Is Associated with Type 2 Diabetes and Statin Use," in the August issue of Optometry and Vision Science, official journal of the American Academy of Optometry.

While further research is needed to understand the true nature of the association, the additional risk of cataracts in statin users appears similar to that associated with type 2 diabetes, according to the study by Carolyn M. Machan, OD, and colleagues of University of Waterloo, Ont., Canada.

Statins and Diabetes Both Increase Cataract Risk The study included nearly 6,400 patients seen at the optometry clinic at the University of Waterloo in 2007-08. Of these, 452 patients had type 2 diabetes. Statin treatment and diabetes were evaluated as possible risk factors for age-related cataracts, controlling for other factors including sex, smoking, and high blood pressure.

Fifty-six percent of patients with type 2 diabetes were taking statins, compared to 16 percent of those without diabetes. Both diabetes and statin use were significantly associated with an increased rate of age-related cataracts.

With adjustment for other factors, diabetes was associated with an 82 percent increase in cataract risk and statin use with a 57 percent increase. Statistically, the increase in cataract risk associated with statins was similar to that associated with diabetes.

The associations differed for different types of cataracts. For one specific type long linked to diabetes (posterior subcapsular cataract), the association with diabetes was no longer significant after adjustment for statin treatment.

Despite the high rate of statin use among patients with diabetes, the two risk factors appeared independent of each other. At older ages, the risk of cataracts increased fastest in diabetic patients who took statins and slowest in nondiabetic patients who did not take statins. On average, cataracts developed 5.6 years earlier in diabetic patients who took statins, compared to nondiabetic patients who did not take statins.

Type 2 diabetes is a known risk factor for the development of age-related cataracts -- a common vision problem caused by clouding of the crystalline lens of the eye. Studies in animals have shown a clear link between long-term treatment with statins (at high doses) and cataracts.

The new study suggests that statins may also be linked to cataracts in humans. The authors emphasize that the study can't prove that statins play any role in causing cataracts, but suggest that such a link is biologically plausible.

While further studies are needed, Dr Machan and colleagues emphasize that the known benefits of statin treatment for patients with type 2 diabetes probably outweigh any increased risk of cataracts. They believe their results will help to increase awareness of the risks of treatments for type 2 diabetes, and may encourage the development of alternative cholesterol-lowering drugs that are not associated with an increased risk of cataracts.

Anthony Adams, OD, PhD, Editor-in-Chief of Optometry and Vision Science, comments, "Considering the increase in the prevalence of diabetes and the corresponding increase in the use of statins, the authors feel these findings serve to encourage further research on the long-term effect of statins on the human crystalline lens."

Attacking Finance Minister P Chidambaram on his proposals on tax regime, CPI(M) today claimed that the measures would facilitate tax avoidance by multinationals and corporates.

?The measures announced are meant to help multinational companies? non-payment of tax on assets they acquire in India and to facilitate tax avoidance by foreign and Indian corporates,? the CPI(M) Politburo said in a statement.

It said in his first statement after assuming office, the Finance Minister has set out a neo-liberal package of measures which seeks to ?reverse the decisions taken by Parliament and his own government.?

?Reversing this measure means helping Vodafone to avoid paying a tax claim of Rs 12,000 crore on acquisitions in India,? the CPI(M) claimed.

Chidambaram has ?made his intention clear to reverse the retrospective effect in the tax law,? the Left party said, adding that this retrospective provision was made in the Finance Bill adopted by Parliament and ?no change can now be made without Parliament?s approval?.

Referring to Chidambaram?s announcement to review General Anti Avoidance Rules (GAAR), it said GAAR was meant to ?plug the loopholes which enable tax avoidance by companies using the Mauritius route.?

The party demanded that the government implement the retrospective provision in the law and work out effective rules under GAAR.

?It is obnoxious to argue that in order to regain ?investor confidence?, tax laws should be so amended as to violate principles of national justice in order to provide avenues for profit maximization at the expense of public revenue,? CPI(M) said.

At a press conference yesterday, Chidambaram had promised fine-tuning of policies and measures to put in place a stable and non-adversarial tax regime and a possible cut in interest rates.

Vision and eye health are generally taken for granted by most people until they experience difficulty in seeing things, which may eventually lead to blindness. Eye health is thus important because it allows an individual to continue on with his or her daily life without undergoing difficulty in vision and possibly discomfort that is related to being blind. There are currently several methods that help in eye protection to prevent symptoms of going blind and maintain good eye health.?

A recent medical report published by Drs. Mainster and Turner enumerated various types of glare that could affect eye health. In their report, the term ???glare??? does not simply indicate the occurrence of bright light that can cause squinting, but also the inability of the eyes to focus and to collect light to generate a high-contrast image. The glare that we see may thus not only involve bright headlights while driving at night, but also the conditions that affect vision during the day. It is therefore essential that eye protection measures be adapted to maintain eye health and prevent symptoms of going blind.?

What This Means for Your Eye Health?

According to the report, good eye health is generally observed when the eyes are capable of adapting to various light and dark environments. During the day, sudden exposure to sunlight may thus result in squinting, which is a natural response for eye protection. On the other hand, good eye health is also shown when we eventually adapt to a dark environment. The low level of light at night triggers an eye protection response, inducing the eyes to adapt to that particular low lighting condition.?

Nightly blurred vision can become a problem when certain activities need to be performed in the dark or in the evening. For example, driving at night requires good eye health because this relies on the precise sight of the road, other vehicles, and people that may also be outside. In addition, the glare from approaching vehicles may also cause difficulty in vision and thus eye protection measures such as anti-glare eyeglasses may help in seeing things while driving and prevent the feeling of being blind.

Poor Eye Health Explained?

The medical report explained that nightly blurred vision involves the scattering of light, thus resulting in a distorted perception of things around us. The quality of the image generated in the brain is thus significantly reduced due to poor eye health or early symptoms of going blind. In order to improve nightly blurred vision and general eye health, eye protection measures may be adapted, including the use of intraocular filter lenses that decrease the scattering of light. These lenses may also help in generating a clear image of the environment, thus preventing a feeling of being blind at night.?

Nightly blurred vision can become annoying to certain individuals, especially when they are also active in the evening. It is also important to understand that nightly blurred vision does not only pertain to difficulty in seeing during the evenings, but also when entering dark places during the day. For example, driving into a tunnel is associated with a sudden decrease in illumination and thus for people with nightly blurred vision, eye protection measures may be helpful. The same experience of discomfort may occur when stepping out of a theater or driving out of a tunnel during the day, wherein the bright lights may cause sudden shock to the eyes. The use of eye protection lenses may thus help in addressing this vision problem.?

There are also other natural ways for eye protection against nightly blurred vision. Consuming fruits and vegetables that contain vitamin A may help maintain good eye health and prevent going blind. The symptoms of eye problems should also be reported to one???s physician and eye doctor, for recommendations on eye protection measures against going blind. It may also be helpful to determine the actual cause of nightly blurred vision, including problems with the retina or photoreceptors of the eyes. Changes in these eye components may eventually result to a blind condition and thus the adaptation of eye protection measures may ease the discomfort of nightly blurred vision or symptoms of going blind.? Advanced biofuels makes a stunning comeback in Washington with three quick committee-level touchdowns on military biofuels, tax credits and algae parity; full Senate vote, conference with House by September?

In Washington, the US Senate Committee on Appropriations and the Senate Finance Committee handed the advanced biofuels industry three of its most significant wins on Capitol Hill this year.

The Senate Appropriations Committee, in approving the 2013 Defense budget, added $100 million to the Defense Production Act ?to build production capacity for critical defense-related initiatives,? which reflects the funding for the Navy?s proposed military biofuels program.

In Washington, the Senate Committee on Appropriations today approved the fiscal year 2013 Defense bill by a vote of 30-0; and the Legislative Branch bill by a vote of 22-8.? Both measures will now be reported to the full Senate for its consideration.? The defense measures had been supported by a coalition of stakeholder organizations including Airlines for America, the American Farm Bureau Federation, the Advanced Biofuels Association, Biotechnology Industry Organization, National Farmers Union and Operation Free.

Meanwhile, the Senate Finance Committee marked up the Family and Business Tax Cut Certainty Act of 2012, which included key energy efficiency and biofuels tax credit provisions.? Included in the bill: the Cellulosic Biofuels Producer Tax Credit (PTC), the Accelerated Depreciation Allowance for Cellulosic Biofuel Plant Property,? clean fuel vehicle refueling property credits,? a two-year extension of the R&D tax credit, and an extension of the $1 per gallon biodiesel blender?s credit. The committee also added parity for algal biofuels in the tax extenders package.

Both the Appropriations and Finance Committee measures now move to the full Senate for consideration, and to conference with the House of Representatives to reconcile differences between Senate and House Appropriations. Votes are expected on the appropriations bills in September.
